The Balfour Cup

The Balfour Cup Competition in it's 116th year was held at Sale Golf Club on Sunday 12th May.

Victory went to Chris Scholes an eight handicapper from Northenden Golf Club. The conditions on the day were difficult with strong winds and showers but Chris managed to score well and came in with a 75 nett 67, 2 clear of Gary Conroy playing off 6, from Blackley Golf Club.
Gary with his 69, pipped Peter O’Neill a 4 handicapper from Swinton Park Golf Club in a card playoff.

They were followed by Adam Holliday another Northenden player who came in with a nett 70 .There were 5 players with scores of 70 and 5th & 6th prizes went to two Prestwich players J Hughes and S Oliver.

The best gross prize was won by Davyhulme scratch player Sam Garnett with a terrific 71, two under the CSS of 73.

The committee has been working hard this year to increase the awareness of these prestigious competitions and the Chairman Mr Don Jackson said the number of entries had greatly improved with over 120 golfers from 19 clubs.

The Houldsworth Cup

Andy and Bill Johnston, father & son from Chorlton Cum Hardy GC won the 2013 Houldsworth Cup at Ellesmere Golf Club held on the 9 th June.
In Runner up place were Dale McAndrew and Mathew Wallwork from Ellesmere GC.

The change of format to a 4 BBB Bogey was welcomed by a large majority of the field and this was reflected in the number of entries which had greatly improved from last year.

There were over 180 golfers representing 15 golf clubs.

With Ellesmere GC being in extremely good condition and the brilliant sunshine on the day contributed to the excellent scoring and more than half the field were All Square or better.

The Balfour and Houldsworth Committee would like to thank all the entrants to the Houldsworth Cup and we hope you enjoyed your day. We also hope you will be able to join us next year for the same event at Disley GC on the 8 th June 2014. Disley GC is celebrating it’s 125 th anniversary. Winners 2013

The G S Lancashire Trophy

The G S Lancashire Trophy in it's 89th year was held at Northenden Golf Club on Sunday 14th July.

The winners on a card playoff were David and Lynda Knapper from Stand Golf Club on 42 points.
Also on 42 points but losing the card playoff were home players Mike and Pauline Earley.
Other prize winners included Merv O'Malley with Lesley Bates from Swinton Park GC (41 pts), Andy Mclaren and Moira Forster from Sale GC and Captain of Flixton GC David Lomax and his wife Jenny, both on 40 pts.

David and Jenny Lomax had just pipped the Northenden Captain John Foster and his wife Hazel also on a card playoff.

The conditions on the day were excellent and praise was given by all the players to the superb condition of the course. A Big Thankyou to all at Northenden.
There were 112 golfers representing 17 different golf clubs.

Oliver Sloane Junior Balfour Winner

Oliver Sloane from Brookdale won the 2013 Junior Balfour Cup at Flixton Golf Club held on the 11th August.

The competition was 18 holes singles medal playing off the white tees which gave the juniors nearly 6500 yards to test their skills.
Oliver managed this very well bringing in a very creditable score of 66 , 5 under the 71 par for the course.
Second in the Under 19 category was Chris Thorp from Worsley GC with a nett 70.

The Under 16 trophy also produced a noteworthy score of 66 from Reece Wilkinson-Price a 22 handicapper from Worsley and the runner up was Archie Palmer from Stamford who finished on par with 71.

The Balfour and Houldsworth Committee would like to thank all the entrants to the Junior Balfour and the Under 16 trophy and we hoped you all enjoyed your day.
We also hope to see you and your friends at next years event at Ellesmere GC on Sunday August 17th 2014.

We would also like to thank everyone at Flixton GC for the hospitality and the help we received with the running of our competition. Special thanks to Flixton Captain Dave Lomax and member Eric Gill for the hard work they have put in to make the event so successful.

The Senior Balfour

78 pairs representing 19 different golf clubs competed in a 4 Ball Better Ball Stableford competition for the Senior Balfour at Worsley Golf Club on Wednesday 14th August.

More than half the field had finished and the committee were hard at work checking cards playoff on the score of 42 points, when the weather changed for the worse but the scores improved.
The penultimate game provided the winners.

They were Ron Jolley and John Hilton from Flixton Golf Club with a terrific score of 45 points. Just losing the card playoff were Swinton Park Players Dave Torkington and Mike Turner.
Also with 45 points and losing the card playoff but receiving 3rd prize were David Foulner and Jack Turner from Blackley GC.
In 4th place were Graham Brownhill and Malcolm Brownhill from Chorlton Cum Hardy GC with another good score of 43 points.

The winners of the veterans prize (both players over 70) were Patrick Keville and John Walsh from North Manchester GC on 40 points.

Praise was given by all the players to the good condition of the course and the greens.

A new Senior Balfour Cup has been purchased and on delivery and we will arrange to meet the winners to present their trophy.
