The Balfour Cup 2019

The Balfour Cup is in its 122nd year and 132 golfers representing 37 golf clubs entered the competition at Worsley Golf Club on Sunday 19th May.

Keith Dingley (14) from Stand Golf Club posted the winning score of gross 79 , nett 65. This was followed by a Card Playoff (CPO) for second place with John Brookwell of Douglas Valley GC, who scored a gross 78, nett 66, and John McAtee of Swinton Park Golf Club with a gross 74, nett 66.

Norman Haslam of Stand Golf Club took the fourth prize with a gross 78, nett 67 and Jim O'Reilly of Swinton Park GC came in fifth with a Gross 81, nett 68.

The best gross score of 71 came from Tony Collinson from Disley Golf club playing off scratch.

Worsley member Andrew Bentley had been at the top of the Leader Board for some time with his nett 68. but alas this score was overtaken by 5 lower scores as the afternoon progressed.

Just by chance the last Worsley winner of the Balfour Cup had called into the club for some lunch. Phillip Biggs, now at the age of 88 is a Social Member at Worsley. He won the Balfour Cup 48 years ago, when it was played at Swinton Park Golf Club in 1971. He kindly agreed to join the Worsley Captain and President for a photo with B&H Trophies.

Keith Dingley is the current President of the Balfour and Houldsworth Competitions Committee. He is the third member of the present Committee to win the Balfour Cup in recent years. The cup was won by the current treasurer Steve Misell of Disley Golf Club in 2011 and by Peter McManus of Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club in 2015.

Members and staff of Worsley Golf Club were very helpful to our Committee and  the food, hospitality and facilities were all excellent.

The committee would like to thank Worsley GC for their help in making the Balfour Cup once again a great success.

The Houldsworth Cup 2019

2019 Houldsworth Cup Winners

John & Luke Aikenhead

We had a full Tee-Sheet of 160 players entered for the competition some days before the closing date and all was looking good for the 2019 Houldsworth at Ellesmere Golf Club.

However, a phone call was received on Saturday afternoon warning that Ellesmere had closed due to flooding on the greens. Emails were sent to all the players advising them to check the Ellesmere website – or wetsite, in this case – on Sunday morning prior to travelling to the course. Thanks to the early morning work carried out by the Green Staff, the course was opened and the 2019 Houldsworth opened on time at 8.00 am.

Early leaders in the clubhouse were the Worsley pair Jon Jones and Andy Barlow with a very impressive 8 up in the pairs Bogey Competition.

But it was Father's Day, and father and son John and Luke Aikenhead had, what John described as a "day-out" and came back late in the afternoon with an amazing 10 up. Needless to day that score saw them take the 2019 Houldsworth Cup with a good deal of joy and celebration.

The 2018 G.S Lancashire, which was due to be played at Flixton Golf Club, had to be cancelled for the first time since WWII due to lack of entries. It was a delight to see that the 2019 competition was back on track with 78 entries from 21 Clubs. The largest number of players, 16 were members of Worsley GC and the second largest group of 13, were members of the home club Stand.

The change of format from Mixed Pairs to a Mixed Team competition will have helped, even though the event was being held at quite a difficult course for some lady members to negotiate. However, the marketing work, carried out by the Committee's first lady member in 122 years, Pat Jackson, can be seen as one of the major factors in bringing in a good field of players. Websites dealing with Ladies Golf and Mixed Golf were continually fed information about the G.S.Lancashire and a special edition of a B&H Newsletter entitiled "G S LANCASHIRE COMPETITION 2019 - NOW OPEN TO ALL" was circulated across the region.

Thanks also must go to the promotional work carried out by Stand Golf Club and for the services and support provided on the day of the competition. Members and staff of Stand Golf Club were very helpful to our Committee and the food, hospitality and facilities were all excellent.

Two of the winning team David and Lynda Knapper of Sale Golf Club had won the G.S.Lancs as a pair in 2013 at Northenden Golf Club. They were joined at Stand GC this year by Alan Wain and Helen Partington of Leigh Golf Club. They recorded a score of 85 points which was just one better that the two teams who came home with 84 points for second and third places on a Card Play-off.

In 2nd place were Mel Clegg, Manchester Golf Club (14), Phil Mottram, Stand Golf Club (10), Chris Harding, Stand Golf Club (5) & Claire Harding, Prestwich Golf Club (19) with 84 points
While in 3rd placed were Paul Cuthbert, Pike Fold Golf Club (6), John Hardman, Stand Golf Club (14), Pat Cuthbert, Bury Golf Club (32) & Paula Mcroberts, Stand Golf Club (12) 84 points.

The 2019 Balfour Seniors

Peter Tonge and B&H President Keith Dingley

Peter Tonge of Swinton Park GC is seen here receiving the Senior’s Balfour Cup from the B&H President Keith Dingley. Peter’s partner was Charles Shin, also of Swinton Park GC, he was unable to stay for the presentation. Peter and Charles were the winners with 43 points. In 2018 they had to settle for 2nd place with 50 points after a card play-off. The hot dry summer of 2018 meant that the balls had been travelling long distances on the Swinton Park course, which was the venue for the 2018 Seniors’. This had resulted a total of 22 scores between 43 and 50 points.  By way of contrast, golf courses in the North West had been suffering from heavy rain during the August of 2019, and Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf was no exception. “The going was heavy” said one competitor.

It was noted that the green staff had done a remarkable job in making sure that the course was playable for the competition. The pins had been placed in the high spots on many greens in case of heavy rain, and some pin positions did pose rather a challenge to many players. As it happened the rain held off for almost all of the competition and sun shone for most of the time.

A Wyatt and TV Lyons of Stand Golf Club came in with 42 points for second place. There were five pairs who came in with 41 points and third place was decided on a card-payoff in favour of James Farragher of Swinton Park Golf Club and Ivan Dudley of North Manchester Golf Club.

The Veteran's Prize, which is awarded to the pair with the best score and who are both over the age of 70 years old, went to Colin Burke and Peter Parmeshwar of Chorlton Golf Club.

In his address, the B&H Chairman, John Farmer thanked Chorlton Golf Club for the services and support provided on the day of the competition. Members and staff the golf club had been very helpful to our Committee and the hospitality and facilities were all excellent.
