Report of the 2025 JD Farmer Seniors
The weather forecast for the Seniors Balfour at Houldsworth GC had not been very encouraging, but fortunately most of the earlier starters got away in dry conditions. Unlike previous years the early starters did not set the pace, and it was not until 9:00 that we saw a score of 40 points delivered by Stuart Murphy and Graham Butler of Worsley Golf Club.
In the next half hour four more pairs returned with 40 points but then there was a lull in high scores for the next 3 hours with only Tony Beddis of Elland GC and Howard Brook of Meltham GC, coming in with 41points and Glen Dutton and Rob Rosborough, both of Halifax Bradley GC, returning what turned out to be the winning score of 43 points. (Unfortunately, Tony Beddis and Howard Brook did not have sufficient Competition rounds between them to claim the 4th place prize) The latter two pairs were among the 28 players who had journeyed over from Yorkshire. Maybe they were better equipped than most to deal with the rain and wind which was settling in for the day.
By early afternoon the skies had darkened, and the rain was getting heavier, but we did see 3 more 40-point scores returned. Stephen Siu and Peter Ky Wong of Stand GC put in a late challenge with 41 points which gained them 3rd place. However, the heroes of the afternoon, who battled through the worst conditions of the day, were Peter Zadoroshnyj and Mark Green of Disley GC, who came in with 42 points and secured a well-deserved 2nd place.
On behalf of the B&H Competitions Committee, John Farmer expressed his thanks to Houldsworth Golf Club for hosting the competition, for the excellent state of the course and the services provided by the bar and catering staff to players in the Clubhouse.
The course had stood up to the challenging weather conditions. Between them 14 players recorded 2's and 46 scored birdies. It was a tad too wet for eagles!
B&H President Keith Dingley presented a cheque to the Houldsworth Captain, in appreciation of the club hosting the competition. Mr Captain thanked the B&H Committee for the excellent and most efficient way that the competition had been organised and run and thanked all those who had taken part in what turned out to be a day of friendly and competitive golf.
This was the first time that the Seniors Balfour had been held at Houldsworth Golf Club and there will be another new venue in 2025 at Davyhulme Golf Club.
This will be the 20th Anniversary of the Seniors Balfour, which has turned out to be one of the most popular and well supported of the Balfour and Houldsworth Competitions.
A total of £1,300 in Prize Vouchers were awarded to pairs to share and spend in the Pro's shop:
